Vine Hopper — the shared-vehicle economics case study

• Tasting fees excluded: "fees range from R55.00 to R120.00 per person per
  farm", paid directly at each estate.

• Three routes, each running only 2–4 days a week: Northern (Mon/Wed/Fri),
  Southern (Tue/Thu/Sat/Sun), Eastern (weekdays Mon–Fri). Each visits 5–6 estates.

• ⚠️ CORRECTED TIMETABLE — this is a repeating same-day circuit, not one daily
  loop. The original entry recorded only the first departure. Vine Hopper's own
  route pages list:

  • Northern: 09:45, 11:10, 12:30, 13:40, 14:50, 16:00
  • Southern: 08:45, 10:00, 11:15, 12:30, 13:45

  That is 5–6 departures per day, i.e. a circuit repeating at roughly
  75-minute intervals from the depot — almost certainly on more than one vehicle.
  Estate pickups run 10:00–10:50 with final collection 16:45 from Remhoogte.
  Pickup from central Stellenbosch guesthouses or the Tourism Information office at
  47 Church Street. Their own warning: "The later you depart the less farms you
  will be able to see."

  Note on how this figure may and may not be used. These are departure times
  from one depot. They are not a measurement of how often a vehicle passes an
  arbitrary point on a loop, and must not be used as a sanity check on the
  concept's assumption that a van lapping a 30 km loop passes any point every ~45
  minutes. The International Synthesis chapters previously used it that way;
  that use has been withdrawn. See D-4 in the Audit of the New World research
  chapter and M-h in the 7. Cross-file consistency audit chapter.

The economic lesson, with the withdrawn part struck: a fixed loop with a
published timetable, unrelated customers sharing a vehicle, and zero tasting
risk (the customer pays estates directly — no float, no reconciliation, no
exposure to tasting-fee inflation). That last point is the durable one.

one driver… routes rotated across days of the week so one vehicle covers three
products. Day-of-week route rotation to keep a single asset utilised is exactly
what a single Australian van would need in order to cover more than one wine
region.
⚠️ WITHDRAWN. With 5–6 departures a day per route, this is not one vehicle
rotated across three products by weekday, and there is no evidence of a single
driver. The route rotation is real; the asset-efficiency conclusion drawn from it
was not supported and had been carried into the International Synthesis as a
recommended operating model. It has been withdrawn there too.

⚠️ Also note the superlative is wrong. This entry calls Vine Hopper "the purest
shared-vehicle economics case", but the Franschhoek Wine Tram
(winetram.co.za, R350pp, five colour lines) is the dominant shared-vehicle
hop-on-hop-off in the SA winelands — bigger and cheaper — and is recorded in
the Aggregators And Shared-Cost Support Models chapters. A cross-file blind spot.

  which is rare and worth copying as a liability-limiting device.
• Fully self-guided: riders "organize their route freely, choosing which wineries,
  olive groves and restaurants to visit". Free parking; reachable by bus,
  Metrotranvía, Uber, Cabify or taxi from central Mendoza — no operator-run
  transfer from the city.
• Free "Maipu Bikes Happy Hour" Malbec tasting after the ride, explicitly framed
  as a social mixer. A zero-cost retention and review-generation device.
• Booking direct on their own site with a date/party-size availability widget.

Market context for Maipú [SECONDARY — discoverargentina.site blog, not first-party**]**

Rental from USD 10/day including helmet, lock, map and water bottle; circuit
15–20 km flat; tastings free to USD 15 per winery (Trapiche USD 12, López USD 10);
typical day 10:00–17:00. The blog also claims "most rental locations offer pickup
service if you've overindulged" — if true, exactly the rescue-van behaviour of
interest, but this could not be verified on any Maipú operator's own site.

Trout & Wine

operator appears defunct or moved — a probable exit, though unconfirmed.

La Bicicleta Verde

  touring or it is sold only on request.

Colchagua / Casablanca, Chile

No first-party bike-and-wine operator site could be verified. The best available
source is a travel blog (talesfromthelens.com) naming Aventura Colchagua in
Santa Cruz as the rental company, at roughly under €7 per 24 hours, with 4–5
wineries inside a 10 km radius of Santa Cruz, tastings from free to CLP 2,000
(Laura Hartwig) up to CLP 25,000 (MontGras basket experience), and explicitly no
formal support of any kind — riders navigate independently. Colchagua's own wine
route body is rutadelvino.cl. Treat all Chilean figures as blog-sourced.
