Method caveat. The session's search quota was exhausted at the outset, so
essentially everything below comes from direct fetches of first-party sites.
That makes the positive findings solid and the coverage uneven — absence of a
finding often means "couldn't reach it", and that is flagged each time.
THE HEADLINE
Across ~30 operators on three continents, not one runs a roving support van for
self-guided customers. The van exists only on guided products, where it is
dedicated to one group and priced into a USD 5,000+ trip. Self-guided support is
universally a phone number — and with a single exception (Hoodoo Adventures in
Penticton, in the Okanagan chapter), nobody publishes what happens if a rider
abandons mid-route, who collects them, or what it costs.
The most explicit statement of the guided/self-guided split comes from Velociped,
which puts both on one page [V]:
- Self-guided: "Während Ihrer Reise sind wir im Notfall auch am Wochenende für Sie
im Einsatz und 7 Tage telefonisch erreichbar." - Guided: a Begleitbus offering "Pannenhilfe und Wegstreckenüberbrückung an
schwachen Tagen" — breakdown help and the ability to skip a stretch on a weak day.
Saddle Skedaddle says the same in English [V]: the support vehicle with "space
for tired cyclists" is flagged "(Only available on Guided and Supported
Holidays)."
Macs Adventure — the largest self-guided specialist in the world (founded 2003,
150+ staff, offices in Glasgow, Denver and Saarbrücken) [V] — sells the
philosophy explicitly:
"we're always here when you need us, we're never there when you don't."
That sentence is the incumbent worldview the Australian product is arguing
against. Macs has built the largest business in the category on the premise
that support should be absent by default. Cellar Door Cycling's premise is the
inverse — that support should be present by default and shared. Worth knowing
that the market leader has explicitly chosen the other side.

The guided price ceiling
Backroads [V]: Madrid–Douro–Porto bike tour,
6 days, USD 5,399–5,999 pp. Inclusions verbatim: "All breakfasts, 5 lunches,
4 dinners; Expertise and services of our experienced Trip Leaders; Snacks and
beverages between meals; Additional guides and experts from the region on many
trips; Van shuttles to support a variety of route options; … Private guided
tours at museums, historic sites, wineries…; Special events, including wine
tastings…; use of fully equipped Backroads titanium bike plus helmet and
accessories; … Baggage transfers and porterage." Excluded: "Leader gratuities,
transportation to and from your Backroads trip start & end locations, and
on-your-own meals & activities." And: "Shuttles are available for guests who wish
to bypass busier stretches of road." Other Backroads European 6-day trips run
USD 4,499–5,999.
A guided van-supported wine week costs 3–4× a self-guided one. That gap is the
space the Australian business sits in — and it is a very wide space. The
question the model has to answer is whether a shared van lands nearer the
self-guided price than the guided one.

Trek Travel's self-guided model in detail [V, Tuscany Self-Guided 2026–27]
5 days, accommodation at one hotel (Le Murarotte), Trek bike fitting and use, daily
breakfast, itinerary planning and route maps. "Your Trek Travel host will meet you
at 11:00 AM at the trip hotel to take your bike." If you're late: "please inform
your host. If you cannot reach them, please call the main hotel." Lunch and dinner
at leisure, car rental recommended, airport transfers self-arranged.
No price figure appears anywhere on the page, including in structured data
[GAP]. Single supplement mentioned ("The additional price guarantees a private
room all to yourself") but unpriced; no e-bike surcharge stated; no statement
about support if you cannot finish a ride.
A contract-vs-marketing gap worth exploiting
Headwater markets "Help available if you need it 24/7" — but its actual booking
conditions contain no 24-hour commitment [V], only "you must inform the local
office or your tour leader and our Customer Services team" (Clause 12) and a duty
to "provide appropriate assistance, in particular by providing information on
health services, local authorities and consular assistance" (Clause 13). Liability
is capped at "a maximum of three times the cost of your travel arrangements"
(Clause 9.2), except death/injury/illness.
Macs Adventure's conditions are near-identical [V]: "prompt assistance as is
appropriate in the circumstances" including "information on health services,
local authorities and consular assistance, and assistance with distance
communication and finding alternative travel arrangements"; contact during the trip
is the "Out of Hours manager via the main office number +44 (0)141 530 2898";
compensation limited to "three times the price paid" for non-injury claims;
luggage liability capped at the customer's insurance excess. Travel insurance is
mandatory: "It is a condition of your contract with us that you must take out
adequate travel insurance." Cancellation: >42 days = deposit; 28–42 days = 30%;
14–28 days = 50%; <14 days = 100%.
The gap between "24/7 support" in the marketing and "we will give you
information about local authorities" in the contract is the whole category's
honest position. A product that puts an actual response commitment in its terms
would be differentiating — and would be assuming a liability every one of these
operators has carefully declined.
