Apps — and the conspicuous absence of an SOS button

  • Headwater Navigation App [V] — best in class. Proprietary, free, offline,
hand-written turn cues, audio prompts for cyclists, hotel/POI/restaurant data, and
"tracks your live GPS position and alerts you if you stray from the route."
Tracking is local to the device — not visible to the operator.
  • Macs Adventure app [V]"Your Full Trip Itinerary" including accommodation,
activities, luggage transfers and equipment hire; "Outdoor Maps & GPS Tracks"
    with daily route descriptions, elevation profiles and downloadable offline tracks;
"Smart Navigation""Hit 'Start' to track your journey, get notified if you
    wander off-trail"
; Macs difficulty grading, estimated time, distance, elevation
    gain/loss on every map; route reviews; trip tips; login by Macs account email;
payment-balance and pre-trip notifications. No emergency SOS button, no live
messaging with the support team, no real-time emergency contact features.
  • Eurobike / Eurohike "on Tour" app [V] — free, ad-free, Android 11+/iOS 16+,
offline via WiFi download, turn-by-turn with voice output, current-position check,
off-route alerts, stage altitude / distance covered / remaining, full digital route
book, POIs, booked-accommodation details, itinerary menu. Unlocked with a download
code (the booking number without the "V") supplied in the travel documents.
Replaces the printed route book and a standalone GPS device. No SOS, no live
    tracking
    "completely free of charge."
  • Trek Travel [V] — third-party Ride with GPS, files sent one week ahead.
  • Discover France [V] — "mobile guidance app" plus a road book.
  • Donau Touristik [V] — optional Fred-App, €10 per booking; plus luggage
    tracking
(guests check status from 13:00 daily) — the only live-status feature
    found anywhere in the world.
  • Austria Radreisen / Radreiseprofi [V] — no app; hands over .gpx and tells
customers to buy komoot World Package themselves for €30.
  • Inntravel, Saddle Skedaddle — route notes and GPX only; Skedaddle GPX on
    request only [V]
    .

Not one operator offers an SOS button or operator-visible live tracking.
Headwater's app tracks the rider to the rider. Donau Touristik lets you track
your luggage. Nobody lets the operator see the customer. For a dispatch-based
shared van, that is the missing primitive — and it is also, on this evidence, an
uncontested one.

Wine logistics — a verified void

  • Fixed-string checks were run for Weinversand, Weinpaket, Weintransport,
    Weinkauf, Versand, "nach Hause", Kiste
across the full HTML of Eurobike's
Winzertour am Rhein, Velociped's Mosel Winzertour and Rückenwind's Rhein
Winzertour. Zero hits on all terms across all three pages [V].

Read that again. Three German operators run a daily van between the exact
hotels where guests are buying wine
, on a tour whose selling point is three wine
tastings, and not one of them offers to carry a bottle. This is the single
strongest evidence in the whole scan that wine logistics is an unoccupied space
rather than a solved one.

  • Ciclismo Classico [V] is the only major
naming shipping partners — Luggage Free and ShipBikes — and it unbundles
wine entirely via a "Wine Kitty" collected by guides on day one.
  • Discover France [V]: wine transport depends on van availability; alcohol
    purchases are the guest's responsibility.
On self-guided (no van) that means you
    carry it.
  • Winery commission: not disclosed by any operator in this set [V — absence].
    Headwater sells Bordeaux wine tastings as a paid add-on ("Visit Package");
Discover France bundles 2 tastings; the DACH operators bundle a standard
3 × Weinprobe — all implying wholesale rates, none published.

Accommodation and bikes

  • Accommodation: universally contracted hotels. 3★–5★ tiers, the guest never
books their own. No operator in this entire scan builds on Airbnb-type short-let
    inventory [V — absence].
The closest analogues are the German Ferienweingut
(winery-owned guest rooms, collapsing bed + tasting room + wine shop into one node)
and Bett+Bike's dedicated Ferienwohnung certificate. Macs Adventure sells
"Hand-picked Accommodations – Stay in boutique hotels, cozy B&Bs, and countryside
    inns"
    [V].
  • Bikes: local partner fleets delivered to the first hotel, with a fitting and
briefing. Trek Travel is the exception (own-brand fleet). Delivery is to the
first hotel or a depot, never to a guest's own door.
    Austria Radreisen hands
bikes over at Schärding — a pure depot model [V].
  • Helmets are inconsistent and a live liability seam [V]: Saddle Skedaddle
mandates them; Trek Travel provides them; Inntravel excludes them
("available locally for small fee"); Freedom Treks says bring your own; UTracks'
FAQ says provided but its Alsace page excludes helmet rental — an actual
    contradiction on their own site.
    Radweg-Reisen imposes a contractual
Helmpflicht (AGB 10.6) that exceeds German law.

Ownership, M&A and distribution — several corrections to the received wisdom

  • Headwater IS Exodus. Headwater's own booking conditions [V] name the legal
entity as "Exodus Travels Ltd (trading as Headwater Holidays)", company no.
    1150160, Platinum House, St Mark's Hill, Surbiton, KT6 4BH.
    Not a sister brand —
the same company. Headwater's footer separately shows ABTA Y0751, ATOL
protected, B-Corp certified, Safer Tourism Foundation member [V]
    .
  • Exodus / Headwater → Travelopia → KKR. Travelopia's own About page [V]:
brands "originally brought together by TUI Group", then "acquired by Kolhberg
Kravis Roberts, a global private equity firm, in 2017, with the vision to create
the world's leading experiential travel company."
    Travelopia: 120+
    destinations, ~400,000 guests/yr, 2,500+ colleagues
    ; Travelopia Holdings Limited,
England company no. 5934241 [V]. Recent divestitures [V]: Sovereign,
American Holidays & Citalia → TravCorp (July 2025)
    ; Sawadee Reizen → Intrepid
    Travel (January 2025)
. Acquisitions: Enchanting Travels AG (May 2019), Kalos Golf
(March 2024). Current brand list [V]: Quark Expeditions, TCS World Travel,
Kalos Golf, Sunsail / The Moorings / Leopard Catamarans, Le Boat, Exodus
    Adventure Travels
, Enchanting Travels & Hayes & Jarvis, Europe Express & YMT
Vacations, Experience Education. Headwater and Country Walkers do not appear on
    Travelopia's public brand list
    — Headwater sits inside the Exodus legal entity.
  • Inntravel AND Explore Worldwide → Hotelplan UK → DERTOUR Group → REWE Group.
Sold by Migros in early 2025 [V-2°: TTG, Travel Weekly, PlanetSKI, Travel
    Gossip]
. DERTOUR's membership of REWE Group is verified on dertour-group.com
    [V]
; hotelplan.co.uk confirms the four brands (Explore Worldwide, Inghams,
Inntravel, Santa's Lapland) and states "DERTOUR UK is proud to be a member of
    DERTOUR Group…"
and "DERTOUR becomes a 100 per cent subsidiary of REWE Group"
[V]. Interhome was carved out and sold separately [V-2°]. Michael Edwards
is MD of Inntravel while also heading Explore Worldwide [V-2°].
  • VBT Bicycling Vacations | Country Walkers → Xanterra Travel Collection [V on
vbt.com and xanterra.com**]**, alongside Windstar Cruises, Holiday Vacations and
    Grand Canyon Railway
; affiliated properties The Broadmoor and Sea Island.
The Flight Centre / Gray & Co hypothesis appears stale. Xanterra does not
disclose its own ultimate owner [GAP]; corporate office Greenwood Village,
    Colorado.
  • UTracks → World Expeditions Travel Group, UTracks Pty Ltd, ATOL 4491 [V].
  • Duke Royalty: no evidence found of any cycling-holiday investment
[V — absence]. Duke Royalty is now Duke Capital. The likely confusion is
with Duke Street, which owned York-based Great Rail Journeys and exited to
Vitruvian Partners [V-2°] — rail, not cycling.
  • Freedom Treks shares a team with Ski Safari [V] — an explicit seasonality
hedge: bikes in summer, ski in winter.

Aggregator / OTA distribution among the majors: essentially absent

[V — absence] The majors sell through their own booking engines. No
Rezdy / Bókun / FareHarbor / Viator footprint was visible on any of Backroads, B&R,
DuVine, Trek Travel, VBT, Macs, Headwater, Inntravel, UTracks or Skedaddle.
Third-party tech identified is navigational, not distributive: Ride with GPS
(Trek Travel), komoot (Austria Radreisen, customer-paid €30), Regiondo (Rüdesheim
Tourist AG). Zoom Leisure's reservations page shows no third-party booking
provider
in source [V].

The real wholesale layer is invisible B2B, not OTA: Radweg-Reisen sells ~100
own-operated tours to Wiederverkäufer via /b2b/infos, Austria Radreisen runs an
agency portal, Eurobike has a Kooperations page — commission rates published
nowhere [GAP]
. Grape Escape's cycling product surfaces on Cycle Tours Global
and TripAdvisor [DIRECTORY], the only meaningful marketplace presence found.
