DuVine (US luxury) — the premium support benchmark
"A guide-driven support van is with you every mile", carrying water, snacks,
mechanical support and luggage; guest-to-guide ratio never worse than 7:1, with
at least one guide on the road and another in the van. Hybrid e-bikes
complimentary; road e-bikes +US$400. Departures guaranteed at 2–4 booked.
Single supplement, with an attempt to match solo travellers to waive it.
[NOT FOUND] any wine-shipping policy. [VERIFIED — duvine.com/faqs/]
DuVine's 7:1 guest-to-guide ratio with one guide in the van is the top of the
market, and it is worth holding next to the Australian model's ambition of
6–8 groups (18–24 riders) on one van. DuVine puts a van behind seven people.
Cellar Door Cycling proposes putting one behind three times that many. That is
either the innovation or the over-reach, and the ride-and-drive test in the pilot
plan is the right way to find out which.
Others visible but not fetched [SECONDARY]
10Adventures (€1,575), Bering Travel (€1,639), eurocycle/radreisen.at,
cycling-holiday.com (€1,419), Portugal Green Walks, TourRadar as a marketplace.
Price architecture is remarkably consistent across all three countries
A 7–8 day self-guided wine-region tour clusters at €1,100–€2,000 pp:
| Operator | Product | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Cycling Rentals | Douro, 6 days | €1,120 |
| Girolibero | Langhe, 7 days | €1,099 (the value floor) |
| Top Bike Portugal | Douro, 8 days self-guided | €1,574 |
| Portugal Cycling Holidays | Douro, 7 days | €1,729 |
| Puglia Cycle Tours | Bike & Wine, 8 days | €1,430–€1,780 |
| Portugal Bike | Alentejo, 7 days | €1,800–€2,390 |
| Authentic Trails | Douro, 8 days | €1,990 |
| Bravo Bike | Rioja, 8 days (guided) | €2,535 |
- Adding a guide and a van is roughly +40–60% (Top Bike: €1,574 → €2,220).
- A luxury tier is +100–120% (€3,485).
- Day products cluster at €44–€150 — BikeSquare €44–99; Slow Days €85–€160;
Freedome €115; Ride Alone €149; Florencetown €149 — with private day tours at
€450 (Portugal Bike Tours Douro).
The add-on ladder is where margin lives, and it is standardised
- E-bike supplement per week: €190 (Cycling Rentals) · €245 (Puglia, as full
rental) · €300 (Top Bike, Portugal Cycling Holidays) · €350 (Portugal Bike)
· US$400 (DuVine road e-bike). Call it €300 ± €80. - Single supplement per week: €350 (Cycling Rentals) · €450 (Portugal
Cycling Holidays) · €480–€840 (Top Bike, season-scaled). - Luggage transfer, priced explicitly twice: €175 pp per week (Cycling Rentals,
as a discount for declining it) and €150 per group for a single overnight hop
(We Like Tuscany). - Group discounts are small and slow: Girolibero 5% at 8–9 pax, 6% at 10+;
Portugal Bike "discount for groups of 4 or more"; Puglia's discount is
structural — the van and a second guide are thrown in above 6 and 13 riders
rather than money coming off.
Seasonality is severe and openly priced
- Portugal Bike's public calendar swings €1,830 → €2,390 (+31%) on the same tour.
- Puglia runs €1,430 in March/November vs €1,780 in September (+24%) and takes
July–August "on request" — effectively shut. - Macs Adventure excludes July–August entirely for heat.
- Cycling Rentals May–October only. Portugal Cycling Holidays April–October.
Girolibero Langhe April–October.
Effective season is roughly 7 months, split into two shoulder-heavy humps around a
hot dead centre, in both Iberia and southern Italy. Only Tuscan day operators
(Bike Florence & Tuscany) and Valdobbiadene (Freedome) claim twelve months, and both
are city-adjacent with short rides.
[NOT FOUND] What any operator does with vans or fleets off-season. Not one site
addresses it.
Note the Southern-European season is the inverse shape of the Australian one:
two shoulders around an unbearable summer. An Australian wine-region product has
the same problem in reverse — a wet cold winter around a good spring and autumn —
and the same operators' response (aggressive published seasonal price ladders and
a free jersey in the shoulder) is directly copyable.
Accommodation is universally contracted, never guest-sourced
Contracted hotels 3–5★, agriturismi, masserie and trulli resorts, pousadas, quintas
and wine estates. Comfort is sold as a tier — Girolibero Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum;
Top Bike Self-guided/Guided/Premium; Authentic Trails Premium/Selected/Casual/Glamping.
Zero operators found using Airbnb-type inventory. The closest are Puglia Cycle
Tours' centre-based option at "a vacation home with kitchenette, trulli and swimming
pool for maximum independence" and We Like Tuscany's agriturismo overnight — both
still contracted properties, not marketplace listings.
The "guest already has an Airbnb" starting point is genuinely unserved. But note
why: the entire sector's margin depends on reselling the bed. Stripping the
accommodation out is not just a channel simplification — it removes the largest
revenue line every one of these businesses runs on. This is the third of the three
findings that close this Italy/Spain/Portugal run.
Bike model splits three ways
- (a) Own fleet at scale — Girolibero's ~2,500 bikes across six European bases
is the only genuinely industrial fleet verified anywhere. - (b) Own fleet, regional — Puglia Cycle Tours (Specialized/Fuji/Atala),
Portugal Bike (CUBE/Scott), Bike Spain (Specialized), bikeiberia (Giant). - (c) Network/franchise — BikeSquare, where local partners own the bikes and the
brand owns the app and the routes.
Delivery to accommodation is established practice — E-Bike 4 Langhe, Italy
Cycling Tour, bikeiberia and La Rioja Bike Tours all offer it, and Cycling Rentals
goes further and couriers boxed, assembled bikes to your hotel 1–3 days ahead.
So door delivery is a solved problem. It is the daytime roving layer that is
missing, not the drop-off. That is a useful de-risking of one half of the
Australian product.
Booking tech is mostly unsophisticated
Confirmed third-party engines: FareHarbor (We Like Tuscany / I Bike Italy),
Rezdy (Bike Tours Barcelona), TsPay for card payments (Puglia Cycle Tours),
Wix (La Rioja Bike Tours). Everyone larger runs a bespoke quote configurator
on their own site.
OTA presence exists at the day-tour end (GetYourGuide for Valdobbiadene;
Tripadvisor-sponsored listings for Chianti; Viator and TourRadar visible in results)
but multi-day self-guided is sold direct.
Apps with GPX: Girolibero's own app, BikeSquare app, Macs Adventure App,
SmartGuide (Cycling Rentals), Art of Bicycle Trips' app, Portugal Cycling
Holidays' "digital guidebook with GPS navigation app". Puglia Cycle Tours and
Portugal Bike loan physical hardware instead — a GPS unit on the handlebar, or an
actual smartphone with tracks preloaded (Puglia charges €20 for a second one).
[NOT FOUND] any SOS button and any live tracking, anywhere in this sample.
Nobody in Italy, Spain or Portugal can see where their customers are. For a
business whose entire promise is "the van is never more than twenty minutes away",
knowing where the riders are is not a nice-to-have — it is the dispatch problem.
This is a clean differentiator and it is cheap: a shared live-location link in
WhatsApp does most of it before any app exists.
